Is the skeleton strong?
This is the king of editing. For fiction, I will help you make sure your characters are deep and consistent, your plot well-paced with no holes, and your theme strong and meaningful. For non-fiction, I will make sure your thoughts are well-organized and your message carried clearly. A content edit generally includes improvements that can be accomplished with the addition, subtraction, or alteration of entire scenes or chapters.
Is the skin beautiful?
Don’t like the way your words flow–or fail to? Not sure if your paragraphs are split correctly? Afraid your hero changed eye color half-way through the book? A line edit generally includes improvements that can be accomplished with the addition, subtraction, or alteration of a single sentence, or a few sentences, up to a few paragraphs.
Are we dressed to impress?
Proofreading is the final pass before publication. I’ll catch your spelling, punctuation, and grammar. A line edit generally includes improvements that can be accomplished with the addition, subtraction, or alteration of a single word, phrase, or punctuation mark.
Most books benefit from all three levels of editing, performed in three separate passes, from content edit, to line edit, to proofread. This is the industry standard–the way your book would be edited at a traditional publishing house.
In the real world, whether you plan to self-publish or are sprucing up your manuscript for submission to agents and editors, you’re probably keeping an eye on your wallet. Depending on the individual needs of your manuscript, we may be able to skip one or two levels of editing, or combine two juxtaposing levels. For instance, if your manuscript needs a thorough proofread, but only a light line edit, we can safely combine the two levels into one, without skimping on the quality of your finished manuscript.
But if top-notch quality is your mission, then the full edit is for you.
